Chapter Fifteen

“Ithought about telling you someone else was in the room but thought this would be more fun.” I snickered. “Your faces! Totally worth it.”

Irene sent me a death glare.

“Duncan’s brother?” Todd asked.

The man did look remarkably like Duncan, just several years younger and a few inches taller.

“This must be the man Miss Wanda saw arguing with Duncan at his house.”

Irene gave me a brief nod and turned to the man. “Did you by chance argue with your brother a few days before he died?”

“I guess you weren’t lying about the psychic thing,” he said with a grin.

I tilted my head, assessing him. He was nothing like Duncan so far. His eyes were warm, his body relaxed. He seemed nice.

“Actually,” Irene told him, “a neighbor saw you there.”

He sat down next to Janice and took her hand. “I see. Yes, I went there to try to talk some sense into him.”

“Janice is dating the brother of the man who ruined her life?” I turned to Irene and Todd. “I’ll never understand humans.”

“I can see you’re a bit confused,” Duncan’s brother said.

“Yes, Mr. Jones.” Irene gestured between the couple. “This strikes me as a bit odd.”

He chuckled. “I’m sure it does. And call me Derek.”

So this was Derek, the man Angelina mentioned. How had Janice, Angelina, and the rest of this mysterious group gotten mixed up with him?

Derek looked at Janice. “Do you want to explain?”

She patted his hand and gave him a tender look. “You can do it.”

He looked up at my humans. “The group you mentioned…I started it.” Derek pulled in a long breath and settled in to tell his tale. “Years ago, Duncan wrecked my life too. I was his first victim. He was upset that our father intended to leave me more money.

“We’d never gotten along. Despite being the more accomplished of the two of us, Duncan was always jealous of me. How well I got along with the family. How many friends I had. He couldn’t get over the money, even though I spent years taking care of my father—and our mother before that—while Duncan couldn’t even bother to call. It wasn’t even that much money.”

“What did he do?” Todd asked.

“He told our entire extended family that I’d been stealing from my parents for years. Not money, but items. He told them I was selling them. I laughed the first time I heard the rumor from my cousin. It would be easy to disprove, right? All I had to do was show the family the pieces of silver, the porcelain figurines. But they were gone.”

Irene sighed. “I take it Duncan took them.”

Derek nodded. “I’m sure he sold them himself.”

I stood up. “Wait! Were some of the figurines of women in hideous, puffy dresses?”

Irene closed her eyes and put a finger on her temple. “Were any of the figurines of women in big dresses?”

Derek gasped. “Yes! Holy crap, you really are psychic.”

“Tell him they’re in Duncan’s house,” I commanded.

Furrowing her brow, she said, “I think…I think they’re in your brother’s house somewhere.
